About Mercy Land

Introduction

Mercy Land Nursery School and Aftercare has cared for children since 2019 and is owned and managed by one family. We welcome little ones through to Grade R, and offer aftercare for primary school children.

We offer excellent educational programmes with age-appropriate activities, led by qualified, dedicated and caring teachers. Children who graduate from Mercy Land leave us well adjusted, well educated, happy and ready for the challenges ahead.

Values and goals

Our goal is an environment where each child grows socially, intellectually and emotionally, at a pace that suits them, while we meet their individual needs and interests. We aim:

  • To embrace each child's uniqueness
  • To foster a positive self-image while respecting the diversity of children, their families and staff
  • To build relationships based on trust and respect
  • To help children learn self-control and express their needs in a positive, socially acceptable way
  • To help children grow in all areas of development
  • To support each child within their family, culture, community, society and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ
  • To follow a curriculum that meets these goals and each child's developmental needs

Our mission

To provide a home away from home for children, offering quality care in a loving environment.

We focus on developing each child holistically, raising well-mannered, confident children with a good foundation education who are ready for primary school.

Admission and fees

Admission

Parents or guardians complete and sign a registration form for each child. It covers special health needs, doctor's details, medical history and any learning barriers. You can complete it online.

The completed form and these documents must reach us on or before your child's first day:

  • Copy of the child's birth certificate
  • Copy of each parent's ID document
  • Copy of the child's clinic card
  • Copy of the medical aid card showing the child's name (if applicable)
  • Proof of income or a letter confirming employment, and proof of address

A once-off, non-refundable registration fee (R700 for 2027) is payable before your child starts. An incomplete form, or misleading information on the form, makes the registration null and void.

School fees

Fees are payable in advance, on or before the 1st of each month. Fees are payable even if your child is ill, on holiday or absent for any other reason.

If fees are not paid by the 1st and we have received no notice, a penalty of R100 per week per child is charged and your child will be suspended until payment is made. No refund is given if a child leaves before the end of a month. Unpaid accounts are handed over for collection.

One full calendar month's notice, in writing and given on the first day of the month, is required to end enrolment. Enrolment runs on a 12-month contract.

School hours and closures

Monday to Friday, 06:30 to 17:30. Closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

We close for about three and a half weeks over the December and January holidays. We may also join 4 to 5 weekdays to public holidays during the year for a long weekend or two. These dates are shared in our first newsletter of the year, in January.

The school may close for any length of time if circumstances require it (for example civil unrest), and for any number of days if a communicable disease is reported.

Collection of children

Children must be accompanied by a parent or our transport to the security gate and handed to the staff member on duty. No child may be dropped off in the parking area or in the road.

If someone other than you will collect your child, please let us know in advance. Children should arrive no later than 08:00, as late arrivals disrupt lessons and class activities. Transport is available on request.

Custody and parent information

If a parent's right to custody becomes limited in any way, for example through divorce, the parent with legal custody must give Mercy Land a copy of the court order. Mercy Land cannot be held liable for releasing a child to a parent who is no longer entitled to collect them if we did not receive proper notice.

Please keep us up to date with any change of address or telephone numbers.

Learning and care

Curriculum, language and religion

Mercy Land is committed to the CAPS curriculum and is an English medium school.

As a Christian school we start each day with Bible study and prayer. In line with the South African Schools Act, we respect every person's freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief and opinion, and we promote the values of equity, tolerance, multilingualism, openness, accountability and social honour.

Discipline: our STAR rules

SSafety first
TToys belong to everyone
AAll play together
RRespect and kindness for all people and things

Every child learns these simple, positive rules. Engaging, age-appropriate choices also keep discipline issues to a minimum. When a child is not being caring, sharing, safe or respectful, we first stop the behaviour, then talk with the children involved about why it was not appropriate, so they learn to work things out and communicate.

Time-outs are used only when a child must be removed to keep everyone safe. No child is ever shamed or subjected to corporal punishment. If a concern needs more attention, we contact parents straight away to work on it together.

Extra-murals and progress reports

Kiddies golf, drama, chess, cricket, soccer and rugby are offered, and are included in your monthly school fee.

Progress reports are sent home in June and December, and every term for Grade R.

Food

We serve a cooked breakfast, a morning snack and a cooked, nutritious lunch (see our menu). Parents supply a healthy snack for 14:30, such as a sandwich, fruit, veggie sticks, rice cakes, cheese, yoghurt or a muffin. Sweets and cold drinks are discouraged so children learn healthy eating habits.

Ingredients are stored in an access-controlled cupboard, checked regularly and by the cook before use, and anything expired is discarded immediately. Meals are prepared in a clean kitchen to suit each age group. Allergies and special diets are recorded at registration.

Aftercare

We collect children from their primary school after school and sport, so please tell us when your child is absent from school. Children get a cooked lunch when they arrive at Mercy Land at 15:00.

Homework is supervised Monday to Thursday, and no homework is done on Fridays. Please still check your child's homework so you know what work is being done.

Sleep, nappies and toilet training

Sleep time: each child has their own mattress, marked with their name and shape, inspected daily by the teacher and monthly by our Health and Safety Officer. Please supply a blanket for nap time.

Nappies: please send 5 nappies a day (not all will be used), wet wipes and bum cream. Nappies are only changed on the changing station, with supplies kept close by so a child is never left unattended.

Toilet training: potty time happens in a designated area only, and spills are cleaned up immediately.

School bags and clothing

Nursery school children need a school bag every day with a clean set of clothes. Please label all clothing, and dress your child in comfortable old clothes, because learning through play is messy. Clothing must not have strings that could catch on slides, trees or fences.

Toys, sweets, cellphones, chewing gum and weapons may not be brought to school. Mercy Land is not responsible for loss of or damage to clothing or devices.

Birthdays

Birthdays can be celebrated with cupcakes and/or a party. Party packs to take home are optional. These are supplied by the child's parents.

Disability and HIV/AIDS

Disability: Mercy Land is not yet fully equipped for children with disabilities, but we are open to admissions. Please talk to us about your child's needs.

HIV/AIDS: no learner or educator is denied education or work because of HIV, and no one may be forced to take an HIV test. Voluntary disclosure is welcomed and kept strictly confidential, and no unfair discrimination will follow.

Health and safety

Health, medication and illness

Please call if your child will not be at school. If your child has a contagious illness, keep them at home until they have recovered. We may refuse entry to a child showing signs of illness, as set out in the National Health Act (Act 61 of 2003).

Medicine is only given once a parent has completed the medicine register. Hand medicine to the staff member at the gate. Prescribed medicine must be in your child's name, in date and carry the original pharmacy label. Medicine is kept in the medicine box or the fridge, and please ask for it back when you collect your child.

Fever: if your child's temperature is above 38°C we will call you to collect them as soon as possible. We may ask permission to give a single dose of Panado syrup, which is recorded in the medicine register and parent call book for you to sign, and confirmed by you in writing by email.

Children must be awake when dropped off, so staff can do the "signs of life" check. If there is an allergic reaction we will contact you and, if needed, call an ambulance, for the parent's account. Outbreaks of notifiable diseases are reported to the Health Department and to parents.

First aid

At least four staff members are trained in Level One First Aid, including choking procedures for children and infants. First aid equipment is kept in the office, with a portable kit in the playground.

Parents are told immediately about any head injury. For a serious injury we contact you and take your child for medical treatment; if we cannot reach you, the school will make the decision. Parents are liable for medical and ambulance costs. Spills of blood or body fluids are cleaned with disposable gloves and antiseptic.

Accidents and incidents

Every accident or incident, however minor, is recorded in our incident file, and investigated further if needed. If a child arrives with an injury that happened at home, it is reported to the office and an accident report is completed.

Emergency situations

We have an emergency action plan for fire, bomb threats and other dangers, and we practise it regularly with the children. Staff lead the children out to the assembly point, where every child is accounted for. Fire safety equipment is always kept clear.

Supervision and weather

Children are supervised at all times, including meal times and sleep times.

When the weather is not suitable for outdoor play, children play inside with blocks, activities or a movie. Fresh water is always available, and children are encouraged to drink often on hot days. Please send a bottle of sunblock at the start of each term.

Safe premises

  • Valid Electrical Compliance Certificate, with safety covers on all unused plug points, checked daily
  • Chemicals locked in a staff-only storeroom, with a fire extinguisher close by
  • The kitchen is locked to children, and the stove is switched off at the wall when not in use
  • Playground equipment and toys are on a register, checked daily and inspected formally; broken items are removed straight away
  • Lead-free paint, a covered sandpit treated with coarse salt, and no toys that pose a strangulation risk
  • Drain covers checked monthly, and no poisonous plants on the property
  • The property is inspected every three months for bees, hornets and rodents
  • Building work is avoided during school hours; if unavoidable, children are kept well away and the area is checked afterwards

Hygiene and cleanliness

Tables and chairs are disinfected before and after meals, and toys are washed regularly. Dedicated cleaning staff follow a cleaning schedule for the school and bathrooms, with toilets and basins as required by by-laws. Toilet paper, soap and individual paper towels are always available.

Smoke-free school

Mercy Land is a smoke-free property, as required by law for childcare premises. This applies to staff, parents, contractors and visitors.

Communication and staff

Paths of communication

We have an open-door policy. To resolve things quickly, please first make an appointment with your child's teacher. If more help is needed, you are welcome to make an appointment with the Principal or Owner. Confidential matters can go directly to the Principal or Owner.

Visits during the school day

Parents have the right to visit their child's school, but visits may not disrupt school activities (South African Schools Act 84 of 1996, section 61). For this reason we do not allow drop-in visits during the school day. Prospective parents are welcome to book a visit or join our Open Day.

Our staff

Only competent people work on our premises, and staff are sent on regular training to keep improving their knowledge and skills. Staff phones stay at their desks and out of the playground, so children have their full attention.
